According to legend, Goddess Bhadrakali herself intervened to protect the people of Chittur from King Rajadhi Raja of the Kongu dynasty (Coimbatore). The festival is a vibrant re-enactment of this ancient battle, featuring rare and awe-inspiring rituals that have been preserved for centuries. The grand celebration begins with Chilambu, a sacred ritual symbolizing the fearful yet devoted worship of Goddess Bhagavathy by the people as war loomed over them.
